Let’s start with the basics.
My name is Gauthier Rouger. I am originally from Biganos and live in the center of Bordeaux now. For those of you that don’t know France, it’s in the south west, not too far from the beach.

How old are you?
I am twenty-two now.

How and when did you start skating?
I started together with my brother when I was really young. My dad bought us a board and we started skating in front of our house. There was nothing to skate at first. Later on we discovered skateparks.

Both of you had a board?
No, we shared one board.

Does your brother still skate?
No, not at all. He doesn’t care about skating anymore. Now he’s into music and just lives a normal life. Skating didn’t last long for him.

What was your first board?
I got my first real board from my mom. We went to a skateshop and I got to pick a deck, trucks and wheels. I got a Flip board. That was when I was eleven years old.

And your first real skatespot?
We only really had one spot in Biganos. It was an empty warehouse that was completely abandoned and a bit messy. We skated there and built things like manual pads and ledges from steel doors. The floor was good and we had a roof over our heads. That was when I was thirteen.

When did you start traveling for skating?
I did little trips to Bordeaux with David Manaud (photographer) when I was riding for Lyrics, the local board company back then. We would go out every weekend with his car and skate the spots in the region.

Did you learn fast?
Not at first. I was really happy when my wheels came of the ground with my first ollie. My first kickflip took me forever.

And ten years later we are doing this interview, to go along with your éS advertisment and the video part.
The éS ad with the frontside feeble?

Yes, that’s the one. How did you end up in Cyprus?
It was a trip of the American éS ams. I was invited to join them for a week of skating. Of course I was stoked to go. It was in the middle of winter and the weather is really nice down there. A really good trip!

Did you have any idea what it’s like there? Did you see any photos or footage?
No, I hadn’t seen anything from there. Eric (Antoine) the photographer had been there and knew some of the spots and some local skaters.

Did you think you could do a trick on the spot when you first saw it?
Not really at first sight. The ground is not really good and it’s quite high and dangerous.

Were you really scared to fall on the other side?
That was my first apprehension, falling over into the big drop. This fear helped me stay on the inside and luckily nothing happened.

So there wasn’t really an attempt where you almost fell down?
I think there was one attempt that was kind of sketchy. But I tried for quite some time, so that’s not too bad. I had to fight for this one.

It’s true that it took you a while. Did you try the frontside feeble right away?
I tried a tailslide quickly to test the spot with a trick that’s safer. But the tailslide was actually scarier than the frontside feeble so I went for that. It took me about an hour to ride away from it.

That’s not something you do all too often. You normally don’t struggle too long for tricks…
You know it happens sometimes. The frontside feeble is a trick I don’t do all the time and the run up was bad. I was not able to get the right speed. It wasn’t simple.

How many times did you think about giving up?
I thought about it a few times. After one hour I took a ten minute break and tried again. And finally magic struck and one of the tries worked out. I don’t even know how I pulled it off.

There were quite a few things going on around you…
It’s true. Everyone was watching and chilling under the trees in the little park next to the spot. But they were skating as well on the little bump. So I wasn’t too disturbed by them. And I already got on well with everybody so it was ok. Not too much pressure.

Did hanging from the swing set help you make the trick?
No, that was after I made the trick to stretch my muscles and stretch my brain as well. I needed to calm down after so many attempts.

Which other spots did you like in Cyprus?
It’s been a while ago now so I don’t remember it that well. But there were the schools with the big blocks where I did the switch ollie and there was a nice marble plaza in Nicosia. That plaza was amazing. We skated all day and no one bothered us.

Did you get along with everybody? Anyone in particular?
Yes, no problems, everybody was really friendly. Tyler Surrey and Kellen (James) were super cool to me. It was a really good crew. The trip was amazing.

So back to some general questions. Why do I get the impression that you are a bit slothful sometimes?
Maybe that’s because I am generally a laidback person. People notice that. But it’s not all the time. But in general it’s true that my attitude is quite nonchalant most of the time.

But it’s also a question of motivation for you a lot of the time?
Yes, sometimes I really don’t feel all that well and it’s quite visible for other people. But if I am with the right crew under good conditions it’s much easier. If there’s a good vibe I am much more active.

Is this typical for where you are from? Like the cliché of people from the south being lazy??
No, I don’t think so. I don’t know a lot of people who are like me. The only one is Jean Phi. He’s a phenomenon of laziness.

How many hours of sleep do you really need each night?
Well I go to be quite late and I don’t get up too late. I try to get up at noon or one at the latest.

But that’s also because of your job…
Yes, I work until eleven at night, but not every day. I work three nights a week and don’t go straight to bed after work. I go out with my coworkers and friends.

Are you going to be in the “Minuit” video that’s coming out soon?
Yes, I filmed for that and they are editing it at the moment. I am not sure if I will have a full part or share it with someone. There are quite a few people, including the Japanese skaters that came to Bordeaux.

What are you up to at the moment? Are you skating much?
I just started again because of the accident. It’s getting much better.

That’s right, almost forgot about that. The photo looks scary! What happened?
I look like Quasimodo! It happened on the way home on a Saturday night. I was driving the scooter with a friend on the back and just slammed going around a corner. I was driving and I got messed up.

But no broken bones?
No, only my head got it bad. Luckily we were only 50 meters away from the hospital. I got four stitches on my temple that’s all. I have been really lucky!

So you are going to be more careful on the scooter? You also use it for work?
Yes, I have been working for Sushi Shop in Bordeaux for one year. I deliver sushi 3 nights per week on my scooter.

And you get to eat a lot of sushi?
I can take some every night after work, but I’m not the biggest sushi fan. I give some to my friends and sometimes I eat some of it. But not more than a few, mostly the vegetarian ones.

What’s your preferred food then?
I have no specific preference. I like Spanish food and Italian is really good, like pizzas…

What about wine? Your region is known for it…
Yes, I like wine and I learned quite a bit about it in my studies. Forgot most of it in the meantime though. I only drink red wine, no white or rose.

So if we dropped you in a supermarket with 15 Euros you would be able to choose a good bottle of whine?
Of course, no worries. Even with five Euros you will get a good bottle of wine here in the region.

What about music? What do you listen to?
I listen to a lot of rap, some old rock n roll and old reggae as well. The rap stuff is mostly French because that way I understand what they’re saying. With American rap I don’t understand the lyrics. Maybe one word per song.

What are your favorite movies?
All of them are French films that don’t translate too well but here’s the top 3:

2. Le grand detournement
3. Les démons de Jésus

Do you watch TV? Any series?
No, I get a headache from it!

Where would you like to travel to? For skating or just on a vacation…
Japan seems like a cool place for skating, but it’s a bit far away and there’s always loads of people, not too into that. Marocco is a place I’d like to visit no matter if it’s for skating or not.

You mentioned your studies earlier. What did you do?
Yes, I did two years of studies in the hotel industry, with multiple internships. I didn’t get my diploma in the end, but I could probably get a job in that sector.

Is that what you want to do later? Or do you have other plans?
I don’t really know. At the moment I have my life in Bordeaux and quite like it. No projects for later on at this point.

What’s the funniest or craziest memory you have from skateboarding?
There were a lot of funny and crazy situations when I lived in Tarnos (near Biarritz) in a house with 3-4 other skaters and we built a miniramp in the livingroom and a curb in front of the house. We had an improvised driving range at the house as well. We tried to hit the soccer stadium that was at the bottom of the hill.

Which one is your favorite éS shoe of all times? Which one do you skate now?
I have always liked the Accel, but now I like the thinner shoes more. I skate the Duran and the Square Two, the thinnest ones to have as much board feel as possible. Even if my feet suffer sometimes…

On commence avec les basiques.Je m’appelle Gauthier Rouger et je viens de Biganos originairement et j’habite a Bordeaux maintenant. Pour ceux qui connaissent pas la France, c’est au sud-ouest prêt de la plage.

T’as quel âge?J’ai vingt deux ans.

Quand et comment as tu commencé le skate?Quand j’étais tout petit avec mon frère. C’est mon père qui m’avait acheté une planche et voila j’ai skaté avec mon frère dans ma rue. On avait pas de skatepark au début, après j’ai continué a skater au park.

Vous aviez une board chacun?Non, on avait qu’une board tous les deux et on la partageait.

Il skate encore ton frère?Non, pas du tout. Ca ne l’a pas intéressée. La il fait de la musique un peux tranquille. Il fait sa vie quoi. Il n’a pas skaté longtemps.

Ta première board pro c’était quoi?Ma première vrai planche, j’allais dans un skateshop avec ma mère et on as acheté une Flip avec les trucks, les roues et tout. J’avait onze ans à l’époque.

Et ton premier spot?On avait un bon spot a Biganos. C’était un hangar désaffecté, donc il y avait personne et c’était un peux le bordel. On se construisait plein de choses, des curbs et des tables a wheeling avec des portes en fer, alors ca grindait. Ca roulait bien et c’était couvert. Vraiment bien! C’etait quand j’avais treize ans.

Quand est ce que tu as commencé de voyager pour le skate?C’etait des trip a Bordeaux avec David Manaud quand j’etais chez Lyrics, la marque de planche de Bordeaux. On partait tout les weekend avec sa voiture, skater les spot de la region.

Tu apprenais vite?Au début ca allait. J’étais super content quand je décollais les roues pour mon premier ollie. Apres pour le kickflip j’ai galéré!

Et dix ans plus tard on parle de ta pub éS que tu as shooté en Chypre.Le frontside feeble sur la flatbar?

Oui, ca vas être une pub, du coup je te pose des questions pour le Behind the Ad. Comment ca s’est fait que tu t’es retrouvé a Chypre?C’était un trip du team éS avec les amateurs des US et j’ai été invité a skater une semaine avec eux. Bien sur que j’ai dit oui directement, c’était l’hiver en plus chez nous et il fait bien chaud la bas. C’était bien cool.

T’avais une idé de ce qui t’attendait la bas? T’avais déjà vu des images?Non pas du tout. J’ai vu des images quand je suis arrivé. Eric (Antoine) le photographe était déjà venu a Chypre et il nous as montré les spots.

Quand tu as vu le spot, tu pensais que tu pourrais y faire un trick?Non, en voyant le spot, pas trop. En plus ca roulait super mal et tout. C’était assez haut et dangereux.

T’avais vraiment peur de tomber de l’autre coté?C’était ma première appréhension, de tomber dans le vide. Avec cette appréhension tu est tirée vers l’autre coté et du coup il s’est rien passé.

Il y avait pas vraiment un moment ou tu avais l’air de tomber dans le vide?Si je crois que il y avait un essai ou j’ai failli basculer, mais une seule fois sur le nombre de tentative que j’ai fait. J’ai bien galéré pour ce trick.

C’est vrai que ca as mis un moment. Tu as directement essaye le frontside feeble? J’ai essayé tailslide vite fait pour tester le spot avec un trick un peux plus “safe”. Mais le tailslide faisait encore plus peur que le front feeble. Apres je me suis battu facilement une heure pour plaquer le trick.

Ce n’est pas un truc que tu fais souvent. Te battre aussi longtemps pour un trick…Ca m’arrive quelque fois, tu le sais, mais frontside feeble est un trick que je ne fais pas très souvent et il y avait pas vraiment assez d’élan tu vois? C’était pas évident.

Combien de fois pensais tu arrêter complètement?Bien trop de fois je penser laisser tomber. Surtout au bout de une heure j’ai fait une pause de dix minutes et après j’ai réessayé. Et pour finir il y avait un essai qui passait comme par magie. Je sais même pas comment j’ai fait.

Il y avait pas mal de gens et de choses qui se passaient autours…C’est vrai que tout le monde regardait. Ils étaient tous dans le petit parc sous les arbres. Mais ils ont skates aussi. Il y avait un petit spot a cote, une petite bosse. Donc ca ne me gênait pas qu’il y ait du monde. Et je connaissais déjà les gars, donc ca m’as pas mis la pression qu’ils soient tous la.

Ca t’a aidée pour le trick de faire de l’escarpolette?Non pas du tout. C’était après le trick, pour me détendre. Ca m’as détendu le cerveau et les muscles.

Quels autres spot a Chypre as tu aimes?Ca fait longtemps déjà. Je ne me souviens pas très bien… Ah oui il y avait les quatre blocks ou j’ai fait le switch ollie et la place en marbre a Nicosia. Elle est trop bien cette place. On peut skater tranquillement, il n’y a personne.

Tu t’entendais bien avec tout le monde? Quelqu’un en particulier?Oui, pas de soucis. Ils étaient tous très sympa. Il y avait Tyler Surrey et Kellen qui étaient vraiment super cool. C’était vraiment un bon crew et un super trip.

Donc je continue avec des questions un peux générales. Pourquoi on a des fois l’impression que tu est paresseux?Déjà parce que je suis un fainéant, donc les gens ils remarquent ca, mais des fois je me bouge quand meme. Mais c’est vrai que mon attitude est assez nonchalante.

Mais c’est aussi une question de motivation chez toi il me semble.Des fois je suis pas très bien et ca se ressent vraiment dans comment j’agis. Mais si je suis bien avec les bonnes personnes et des bonnes conditions ca va beaucoup mieux. Si il y a une bonne ambiance je vais plus m’activer

C’est typique pour ta region? Un peux pareil comme on dit que les Espagnols sont fainéant…Non je ne pense pas. Je ne connais pas beaucoup de gens qui sont comme moi. Le seul est Jean Phi. Lui c’est un sacré phénomène au niveau de la flemme.

Combien d’heures de sommeil il te faut vraiment en moyenne?En fait je me couche tard et je me leve pas tres tard. J’essaye de me lever a midi, une heure maximum tout les jours. Donc ca va.

Ca dépend aussi de ton travailOui, je travaille jusqu’a onze heures du soir, mais c’est pas tout les jours. Je travaille trois soirs par semaine. Et je vais pas directement me coucher après le travail. Je sors avec les collègues et les potes.

Est ce que tu serras dans la vidéo Minuit, qui est supposée sortir bientôt?Oui, carrément, j’ai filmé pour ca. Ils sont en train de faire le montage, je sais pas si j’ai une vraie part ou avec quelqu’un d’autre. Il va y avoir les Japonais qui sont venu a Bordeaux et tout.

Qu’est ce que tu fais en ce moment? Tu skates?Depuis mon accident il y a quelques semaines j’ai repris le skate et ca va beaucoup mieux.

Qu’est ce qui t’est arrivé? La photo fait peur!Quasimodo! C’était en rentrant de soirée, un Samedi soir. Je roulais en scooter avec un pote a l’arriéré et je suis tombé tout seul dans un virage et voila. C’est moi qui conduisait et c’est moi qui as tout pris.

Rien de cassé?Non, pas du tout c’est juste la tète qui as ramasse. Heureusement on etait a 50m de l’hopital. Quatre point de suture a l’arcade c’est tout. J’ai eu de la chance!

Donc tu dois être un peux plus prudent en scooter. Tu l’utilises pour le travail aussi…Oui, ca fait un an que je travaille a Sushi Shop a Bordeaux et je fais les livraisons le soir en scooter trois fois par semaine.

Et tu manges plein de Sushi?Je peux en prendre tout les soirs après le travail, mais j’aime pas trop. J’en donne a mes potes, ceux qui en veulent. Des fois j’en mange, mais pas plus que un ou deux. Je préfère les sushis végétarien.

Tu préfères quelle nourriture alors?J’ai pas de préférence particulière. J’aime bien la bouffe Espagnole, la cuisine Italienne me va très bien, les pizzas et tout.

Ta région est connue pour le vin. Tu aimes le vin?Oui, j’aime bien le vin et j’ai appris pas mal de choses sur le vin dans mes études, mais entretemps j’ai tout oublié. Je bois que du rouge, je n’aime pas le blanc ni le rose.

Mais si on te posait dans un supermarché avec vingt Euros tu pourrais trouver une bonne bouteille de rouge?Ah oui, pas de soucis. Même pour cinq Euros tu as une bonne bouteille de vin ici.

En musique, tu écoutes quoi ?J’écoute beaucoup de rap du vieux rock n roll et du vieux reggae aussi. En rap c’est beaucoup de rap français parce que je comprends ce qu’ils disent. Le rap américain je comprends pas vraiment bien les paroles. Un mots sur la chanson…

Tu regardes la télé? Des sériés?Non ca me fais mal a la tête.

Ou aimerais tu voyager? Pour le skate et sans skate?Pour le skate, le Japon a l’air trop bien, mais toutes les contraintes qu’il propose ne me réjouisent pas. Je voudrais aller au Maroc, skate ou pas skate peu importe.

Sinon, tu as fait des études après l’école ?Oui, j’ai fait deux ans d’études dans l’hôtellerie avec plusieurs mois de stage. Je n’ai pas eu mon diplôme, mais je pourrais bosser la dedans.

T’as une idée de ce que tu vas faire plus tard ?Je sais pas trop. Pour le moment j’ai ma vie a Bordeaux et ca me plait bien. J’ai pas vraiment de projets pour plus tard.

Quelle est la situation la plus folle et la plus drôle que tu as vécu en faisant du skate?Pour moi la plus folle et drôle des situation était lorsque l’on avais construis une mini rampe dans le salon de la maison a Tarnos ou j’habitait avec 3-4 potes, il y’avais aussi un curb devant la maison et un stade de foot ou on tirait des balles de golf.

Quelle est ta chaussure préférée de éS de tout les temps ? Quelle modele tu skates en ce moment ?J’ai toujours bien aimé la Accel, mais maintenant je préfère les shoes qui sont plus fines. Je skate les Duran et les Square Two, les plus fines, pour avoir un maximum de feeling pour ma planche. Même si ca fait un peux mal aux pieds des fois…
